Vijay attended Fathima Matriculation Higher Secondary School before transferring to Ballok Matriculation Higher Secondary School to finish his education. Following graduating from high school, Vijay enrolled at Loyola College to pursue a degree in Visual Communications. He quit his studies nonetheless since he wanted to concentrate more on his acting profession. He made his professional debut as a child artist at the age of 10 with his father S. A. Chandrasekhar's 1984 film Vetri.
The next year, he began working as a child artist in films like Kudumbam (1984), Vasanth Ragam (1986), Sattam Oru Vilayattu (1987), and Ithu Angle Neethi (1988). He once again participated as a kid artist in Rajinikanth's 1985 movie Naan Sigappu Manithan. In 1992's Naalaiya Theerpu, he made his acting debut.
